Expectations for Any Freight or Logistics Challenges:
No major challenges have been reported.
Opportunities in Your Market for Specific Varieties, Sizes, and Grades:
Anjou pears are the primary choice for the Indian market.
Update on the Competition in the Market:
The imported pear market in India is currently dominated by pears from South Africa from 2025 season. Fresh pears from South Africa will start arriving from February 2026.
Political or Economic Issues Impacting Imports, Retail, or Consumer Behavior:
India and the EU have signed a trade deal. Import duty for pears from Europe has been reduced from 30% to 10% under a TRQ. Effective date of the agreement is likely to be 2027.
Other Brief Comments:
While the arrival quality of USA Pears was excellent this year, some major importers feel that wholesalers and traditional retailers have lost touch with Anjou pears. Large scale incentivisation and sampling will be needed in the future to win them back. The trade in India has been conditioned to sell Forelle, Vermont Beauty and Packham varieties from South Africa due to their year-round availability.
