The region is a price-driven market looking for medium- to small-size fruit; the preferred varieties are Bosc and Green Anjou for Ecuador and Green and Red Anjou for Peru.
Update on the Competition in the Market:
Ecuador has opened its market for European pears, and in the past two seasons, a few loads did appear in the market, with some fruit expected for this season, as well. At this point, the majority of the pears available are still Argentinean pears, mostly Packham and a few Green Anjou.
Political or Economic Issues Impacting Imports, Retail, or Consumer Behavior:
Both countries are still struggling with their political situation. The private sector is managing to progress in spite of that. It is true that some economic effects are felt, but life must go on.
