Feedback from the Trade on Their Plans and Interest in the USA Pear Season:

Trade is expected to step up orders for USA Pears in the coming weeks, supported by regular visits from Gulf States staff. Importers are working to revive connections with U.S. suppliers, with several reporting that they have already begun outreach and plan to place orders soon. Two prominent importers indicated they will further increase purchases if the first arrivals meet quality expectations. Re-exports to neighboring GCC countries and Yemen (small sizes) are also possible. Trade was informed that the current USA Pear crop shows notable improvements in both quality and volume compared to recent seasons — news that was well received and has strengthened interest in expanding orders.

Expectations for Any Freight or Logistics Challenges:

According to trade sources, shipping and transit time remain the main challenges this season. CMA CGM is currently the only major carrier operating through the Red Sea, while other lines continue to face logistical constraints that extend delivery schedules. Last year, some shipments took up to 80 days to arrive; at present, average transit time has improved to approximately 35–40 days.

Opportunities in Your Market for Specific Varieties, Sizes, and Grades:

In the UAE specifically, and the GCC region in general, mid to large sizes are preferred, with US No. 1 and Fancy grades considered ideal. In secondary markets such as Yemen and Iraq, smaller sizes and lower grades are favored due to higher price sensitivity.

Update on the Competition in the Market:

There is reduced pear output in Italy and limited EU supply overall despite steady production in Belgium and the Netherlands. South African volumes remain stable, traders report occasional port bottlenecks and shipping delays. Key competitors include South African varieties such as Forelle and Rosemarie. Argentinean Anjou is competitively priced but smaller and lower in quality than U.S. Green Anjou, while Chinese Nashi pears remain widely available but are not preferred for their taste.

Political or Economic Issues Impacting Imports, Retail, or Consumer Behavior:

Yemen was previously a good market for small-sized USA Pears. One trader that focuses on re-exports more than the local market will attempt to source USA Pears for Yemen this season - and possibly Iraq. The luxury fruit segment is gaining popularity in the UAE. One example is the "The Fresh Market," owned by a long-time USA Pears buyer. It has turned into a popular shopping destination among the country's VIPs and their staff. Bulk sales are often made for large events such as weddings.

Other Brief Comments:

USA Pears have a good opportunity to regain some market share this season despite some logistic challenges.
